You’ve lived in your home for ten years and never once thought about what’s inside those ducts.
You change your air filter regularly. You schedule HVAC maintenance. But when’s the last time anyone actually looked inside your ductwork? For most homeowners, the answer is never. Out of sight, out of mind—until you start noticing more dust than usual, musty smells when the system runs, or allergy symptoms that won’t go away.
At H&H Heating and Air Conditioning, we’re often asked how often ducts really need to be cleaned. The honest answer? It depends. Some homes need it more frequently than others.
The General Recommendation
The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends cleaning air ducts every three to five years for most homes. Some well-maintained homes can stretch this to six to eight years.
The EPA takes a more conservative position: clean when there’s a specific need or visible contamination. They don’t recommend routine cleaning on a fixed schedule, but they do recommend cleaning if you see visible mold, evidence of pests, or excessive dust and debris.
The best approach? A condition-based one. Rather than cleaning on an arbitrary timeline, assess what’s actually in your ducts and clean when the evidence says it’s needed.
Factors That Mean More Frequent Cleaning
Pets: If you have dogs or cats, especially heavy shedders, pet hair and dander accumulate in your ductwork faster than normal dust. Homes with pets typically benefit from cleaning every two to three years.
Allergies or asthma: When family members have respiratory sensitivities, reducing airborne allergens matters more. More frequent cleaning—every two to three years—can provide noticeable relief.
Smokers in the home: Smoke particles stick to duct surfaces and recirculate with every HVAC cycle. If someone smokes indoors, cleaning every two to three years helps reduce that residue.
Location: Living near busy roads, construction zones, or high-pollen areas means more outdoor contaminants enter your duct system. Rural or dusty environments also increase accumulation.
Older homes: More years of accumulation, potentially poorer sealing around ductwork, and decades of wear can mean more buildup than newer construction.
Heavy HVAC usage: Homes that run the system constantly move more air through the ducts, which means more opportunity for debris to collect.

Factors That Allow Longer Intervals
Not every home needs frequent cleaning. You can likely wait the full three to five years—or longer—if you have no pets, no one has allergies, no smokers live in the household, your home is newer with well-sealed ductwork, and you change filters regularly.
With good maintenance habits, some homes can go six to eight years between cleanings.
Event-Based Cleaning: When to Clean Regardless of Schedule
Certain events should trigger duct cleaning no matter how recently you had it done:
After renovation or construction: Drywall dust, sawdust, and construction debris find their way into ductwork even when contractors try to contain it. Clean immediately after any major project.
After moving into a previously owned home: You don’t know the previous owners’ habits—whether they had pets, smoked, or ever cleaned the ducts. Starting fresh makes sense.
After discovering mold: If you find mold in your HVAC system or home, cleaning removes spores that would otherwise continue circulating.
After pest infestation: Rodents and insects leave droppings, nesting materials, and debris that contaminate your air supply.
After water damage: Moisture in ductwork creates ideal conditions for mold and mildew growth.
After fire or smoke damage: Smoke residue coats duct surfaces and continues to circulate until cleaned.
Signs It’s Time—Regardless of Schedule
Don’t wait for a calendar date if you notice these warning signs:
- Visible dust puffing from vents when the system starts
- Dust buildup on registers that returns quickly after wiping
- Musty or stale smell when the HVAC runs
- Unexplained increase in allergy or asthma symptoms
- Visible mold growth near vents or inside ducts
- Inconsistent airflow between rooms
- Higher than normal dust accumulation on furniture
How to Check Your Duct Condition
You can do a basic assessment yourself. Remove a vent cover and look inside with a flashlight. Check for visible dust, debris, or discoloration. Look for signs of moisture or mold. Check multiple vents in different areas.
If you see heavy buildup, visible mold, or notice a musty smell, call a professional. For borderline cases, a professional inspection with a camera shows you exactly what’s in there.
When You Don’t Need Cleaning
Not every home needs duct cleaning, and not every situation calls for it:
- No visible contamination or symptoms
- Ducts were cleaned recently (within two to three years)
- Home is newer with minimal accumulation
- Filter changes and maintenance have been consistent
- No triggering events like construction, pests, or water damage
And here’s an important rule: don’t clean just because someone knocks on your door offering a deal. Those “$49 whole house” offers are almost always scams or bait-and-switch tactics.
Finding the Right Balance
Cleaning too often wastes money and can potentially damage ducts from repeated access. Never cleaning when needed leads to poor air quality, allergen exposure, and reduced HVAC efficiency.
The right balance is a condition-based approach: establish a baseline with a professional inspection, track any triggering events, and schedule inspections every two to three years to assess whether cleaning is actually needed.
