You’ve decided tankless is the way to go—but which brand? At H&H Heating and Air Conditioning, we’ve installed tankless water heaters from every major manufacturer for decades. There’s a reason we recommend Rinnai to our Richmond-area customers: we’ve seen what holds up, what performs, and what keeps customers happy years down the road.

Who Is Rinnai?

Founded in 1920 in Japan, Rinnai launched their first tankless water heater in 1921. They entered the North American market in 1974, and today operate their U.S. headquarters in Peachtree City, Georgia with manufacturing in Griffin, Georgia.

With over 30 million units sold worldwide—including 2 million+ in North America—Rinnai is the #1 selling tankless water heater brand in the U.S. and Canada. That track record matters when you’re investing in equipment that should last 20 years.

Why H&H Recommends Rinnai

Reliability. Rinnai units consistently require fewer service calls than other brands we’ve installed. Problems that do occur tend to be minor maintenance issues, not component failures.

Parts and support. Rinnai parts are readily available, and their technical support is responsive. We’ve dealt with brands where replacement parts take weeks—that’s not the case here.

Build quality. Rinnai manufactures most key components in-house and individually tests every unit before shipping.

Long-term satisfaction. Customers we installed Rinnai units for 10-15 years ago are still running strong.

Rinnai Product Lineup

SENSEI RX Series (Condensing): Up to 0.98 UEF efficiency—industry-leading. Works with gas or propane without conversion kits, installs indoors or outdoors.

RSC Series (Condensing): Smart-Circ recirculation technology, delivers hot water to up to six fixtures simultaneously.

RE Series (Non-Condensing): Value-focused with reliable performance. REP models include built-in recirculation pumps.

For most Richmond homes, we recommend the SENSEI RX or RSC series—higher efficiency pays for itself, and PVC venting makes installation simpler.

Condensing vs. Non-Condensing

Condensing models (SENSEI RX, RSC) capture heat from exhaust gases, achieving 96-98% efficiency with cooler exhaust (100-120°F). This allows PVC venting, often saving $400-800 on installation.

Non-condensing models (RE series) run 80-85% efficiency with 300-400°F exhaust, requiring stainless steel venting. Lower upfront cost, but higher installation expense.

For most installations, condensing models make more sense long-term.

Smart Recirculation Technology

Smart-Circ learns your hot water usage patterns over seven days and schedules recirculation accordingly—hot water ready when you need it without wasting energy.

ThermaCirc360 allows recirculation even without a dedicated return line, using a thermal bypass valve at the farthest fixture. Great for retrofits.

Warranty Coverage

Rinnai offers one of the industry’s strongest warranties:

  • Heat exchanger: Up to 15 years (SENSEI models)
  • Parts: 5 years
  • Labor: 1 year, extendable to 5 years with registration

Rinnai vs. Other Brands

vs. Navien: Both excellent. Rinnai has longer U.S. track record and better parts availability in our experience.

vs. Rheem: Rinnai offers higher build quality and more advanced technology.

vs. Noritz: Similar quality, but Rinnai has stronger installer network in our area.

Maintenance

Annual flushing with white vinegar removes scale buildup—critical for longevity. Filter cleaning every 6-12 months and professional inspection annually keep units running efficiently. With proper maintenance, expect 20+ years of service.
