What Does a Frozen AC Look Like?

Why Air Conditioners Freeze Up (The Science)

Here’s what’s happening inside your system: Your evaporator coil contains cold refrigerant that absorbs heat from the air passing over it. In normal operation, the refrigerant stays around 40 degrees—cold, but not freezing. When something restricts airflow or refrigerant levels drop, the coil gets colder than it should. Moisture in the air condenses on the coil and freezes. That ice acts as insulation, making the coil even colder, which causes more ice to form. The cycle continues until the system is frozen solid.

Low refrigerant causes the pressure in the evaporator coil to drop, making it colder than normal. What to Do If Your AC Is Frozen
